The newest all-star out of the Bay Area rap scene dropped one of the most impressive releases of 2014, with this funky almost jazz inspired entirely self-aware mixtape. “Ten Freaky Hoes” has possibly my favorite hook of any rap song.

You Blew It!- Keep Doing What You’re Doing
The lovable Orlando emo quintet put out another solid album early this year that everyone who ever went to high school can probably find meaning in. “Award of the Year Award” goes hard (check me out in the music video (I’m Darth Vader at one point))
Music Video for “Award of the Year Award”
Tigers Jaw- Charmer
I was lucky enough to see these fellows on tour with Touche Amore and Dads over in California. Not their best release so far, but awesome for sure with bangers like “Slow Come On”.
Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band- Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything
Efrim from Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s other incredible post-rock group made a milestone with this release, “What We Loved Was Not Enough” is one of the best post-rock songs released in years.
Swans- To Be Kind
I’m not even going to attempt to describe, it just listen. Especially “Oxygen”.
Sun Kil Moon- Benji
Mark Kozelek put out probably his most significant album yet, with the stylistically simple yet elegant lyrics coupled with his bone-rattling vocals. “Pray For Newtown” and “I Can’t Live Without My Mother’s Love” will get you.
Ratking- So It Goes
Titled as a reference to the immaculate “Slaughterhouse 5” by Kurt Vonnegut, you already know walking into this, that this album will be unlike any other, which it is. The feature of King Krule on “So Sick Stories” killed the hip-hop game, so it goes.
Mac Demarco- Salad Days
The indie god released another incredible album, its tough to follow up something as amazing as his last album “2” but he sure did deliver. Perfect midnight summer beach aesthetic music, “Treat Her Better” and “Chamber of Reflection” will prove it.
Death Grips- niggas on the moon
I promised myself I wouldn’t do this, I wouldn’t get worked up over this, just give me a minute. As I’m sure you know, Death Grips broke up last week making this first part to a two part album (the powers that b) their final release while they were together. The second part “jenny death” is set to come out later this year probably at 2 AM for free on a Thursday like this one did. Featuring Bjork on every song this album is one of my favorites, “Black Quarterback” is one of their best songs and “Say Hey Kid” is incredible.
