Our fourth baby, my third daughter, is due to be born any day now. I’m excited because I love being a dad to girls, and it means we get one last chance to watch a kid grow up. It goes fast. You close your eyes and open them to find babies turned into toddlers. So you savor every moment, every memory.
But having kids is also daunting right now. There’s so much uncertainty on the horizon about the kind of world they’re going to inherit, and how I’m supposed to prepare them for it. I try not to dwell on it too much and just love them and be the dad I wish I had.
My new article in The Spectator is related. It’s about the right’s relationship with women and the problems it poses for things like family formation.
It grew out of an interaction I had with a reader of this Substack, who told me about how her marriage was affected after her husband marinated his mind a little too much in online spaces.
I’ve received a lot of messages like that over the last few months. People who are reconsidering their views or, in some cases, starting their lives over. Hearing these things makes the work worth it.
I’ve been writing more here lately because I want to keep growing Contra with more new content. It has been instrumental in supporting my family.
If you’re in the group chat, you might have seen the conversation we had about science fiction and fantasy novels. Book and movie reviews are things I’d like to introduce for paid subscribers. I’m currently reading Scion by James Islington, so that might be the test case. On top of that, I’ve got a paid article coming out tomorrow on The Daily Wire’s new movie, Pawn Shop. Not a review, but a critical consideration, based on what we know from the leaked draft script—and what we know is that it isn’t any good.
If you’ve enjoyed reading Contra for free and want to help me grow this thing into the future, please pick up a subscription for just $5 a month or $45 a year.
And if you have thoughts on what kind of content or features you’d like to see (such as a subscriber Discord or something like that), please let me know.
Thanks for reading and supporting Contra.
