I enjoyed this piece greatly. You really do have a unique perspective and I’m sorry that you were essentially left on an island for a few years there, but I hope that will start to change.
I’m glad you talk about the example of Milo, because it’s genuinely terrifying that a psychopath like Laura Loomer can get people deported. I’m not MAGA anymore, but if I were, I would seriously have to step back and question how I could, in good conscience, be part of any movement that includes someone as despicable as her.
But I think the problem is not that MAGA is an inherently pessimistic and nihilistic movement— although it is. MAGA conceives of government and indeed society as irretrievably broken, and when something’s irretrievably broken, you blow it up. The left also has a bit of this when it conceives of society and institutions as inherently racist (though this is a fringe view on the left.) however, even when the left seeks to blow things up, they have a positive vision of what they would replace it with. MAGA does not. And that’s the inherent problem with MAGA. It becomes a movement of just randomly blowing things up with no strategy or plan whatsoever (and if they love blowing things up so much, no wonder they also love Israel.)
Anyway, I digress. I’ve gotten far off topic from what your post said.
Thanks for being willing to admit you were wrong in the past. It is indeed the hardest thing for anyone to do nowadays. I don’t remember you being an asshole when you were on the right but maybe that’s because I was an asshole myself at that point…. In fact, I’m quite sure of it. I read something I wrote in 2018 and omg it was so cringey. I can’t imagine what it’s like for you having things you wrote that you now disagree vehemently with that were published and still available forever on the internet. I guess I’m glad now my writing career never took off lol.
Disappointed to see you lump everyone on the Right into the same category. It may play to the Left, but you should know better.
